Bird Song
Sailing Since 1998.
We (Tom and Marcia) met in 1998 while we were both rock climbing instructors in Central New Jersey (USA). I (Marcia) was racing sailboats locally and invited Tom to join the crew. Our love of the outdoors continued to grow as did our love for each other. When contemplating what to do when as retirement approached Tom suggested “let’s buy a sailboat and see where it takes us.”

BIRD SONG
The Ovni
- Bird Song (named after the Grateful Dead song) is a 2008 Alubat Ovni 395, Hull #79
- 42- ft aluminum hulled and insulated boat with a 55 HP Volvo Penta engine and a centerboard. The centerboard offers more speed and control going downwind, is safer in a storm, and allows access to shallower waters, including the ability to beach the boat during low tide.
- Beaching the boat while also being unique and fun allows access to the underside of the boat for repairs without having to lift it out of the water.
- We chose the boat for its seaworthiness and layout. It has 2 sleeping cabins plus a technical room. Insulation keeps the boat warm in winter and cool in summer and offers sound insulation as well, just like a house.
- The aluminum is stronger than fiberglass, meaning it is more forgiving if you hit something or something hits you!
